I Am The Way

Friday of the Fourth Week of Easter

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

John 14:1-6  - Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.  In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.  Where I am going you know the way.”  Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?”  Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”

(Parent)  Reread this part a few times aloud

“I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.”

(Parent)  Read this meditation aloud to the family

This passage, like many during these days, is from the Last Supper Discourse from John’s Gospel.  At this particular point, Jesus has just told His disciples that someone will betray Him, and also that He is about to go away.  Naturally, they are troubled.  Jesus reassures them, “Do not let your hearts be troubled,” and tells them that He is going to prepare a place for them, and then He will return to take them to Himself.  What they don’t yet understand is that Jesus is going away to die, but in doing this He will prepare for them a Heaven that is opened to them, and then He will rise from the dead and take them to Himself.

God wants us to be with Him.  Jesus tells us He will take us to Himself; that where He is we also may be.  What comfort to know God loves us with an infinite love and wants our ultimate happiness.  We will find this happiness precisely in Him.  What a comfort, as well, to know that it is God who makes this ultimate happiness possible: “I am the way” (John 14:6).  We must remember that God has fought for us and won the victory.  Victory is ours when we keep following Him (He is the way!) until we finally rest in Him (He is our end!).  Praised be Jesus Christ!

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
