Above All

Thursday of the Second Week of Easter

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

John 3:31-36  - The one who comes from above is above all.  The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things.  But the one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.  Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy.  For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God.  He does not ration his gift of the Spirit.  The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him.  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life…”

Jesus says “whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.”  We sometimes think that He means that if we truly believe in Him (and love and obey Him) as our Faith teaches us to do, then we will someday go to heaven—to eternal life.  And we are right.  But St. John, in his Gospel, doesn’t consider eternal life something we can receive only after we die.  He tells us that we already have eternal life, now, here on earth, if we possess Christ.

A deep truth is at work here.  Christ Himself is our life.  It is Christ Himself who is eternal life.  To demonstrate this, let’s look at what God says when He reveals His Name to Moses; He says, “I AM.”  Ultimately, God is; He lives eternally and infinitely.  So, then, if we have eternal life, we don’t just possess life, or live life.  If we have eternal life, it means we are existing and living in God.  Our life is a Person, Jesus Christ.  Knowing this, consider how loving the crucified Jesus is, and how victorious the Risen Jesus is.  This is your life!  He is your life!

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
